Catalogue 9 (plus freebies) out now   Leave a comment

Ok, so after two years I have finally produced a new catalogue, and it’s now available from wargamevault and drivethruRPG (and hopefully from wargamedownloads soon as well). As ever, all our game products are described in detail, with some insights from the author (ie me!) and quotes from customer reviews.

I am also maintaining the tradition of including a free game with each catalogue – or rather two free games in this case. Just like Catalogue 8, the new one features a mini-RPG scenario written for Argor FRPG followed by a linked mini-wargame. Together they’re called Escape from the Trow. You can play either as stand-alone games if you like.

Update   Leave a comment

It has been a long time coming, but I’m starting early play tests of a new free mini-game to include in Catalogue 9. Same format as Catalogue 8: an RPG mini-scenario written for Argor rules, followed by a mini-wargame. The wargame can either follow-on from the events of the scenario or be played as stand-alone. More news when the catalogue nears completion!

New product: Dig-In For Victory   Leave a comment

Ok, our latest resource is now available. Dig-In For Victory! is mainly intended for wargame designers wanting some information about warfare in the late 19th/early 20th centuries. However, there’s a lot of data that is transferable to other periods, as far back as medieval times, plus some useful stuff for RPGs.

The resource contains extracts from the Royal Engineers’ Manual of Field Engineering 1911. Lots of useful stuff about digging defences, creating fortifications, building bridges, defending various types of location and blowing things up. Plus scans of the original illustrations, including some great plans for outposts and strongholds.

As this will of varying usefulness, depending what you want from it, we’re using the ‘Pay What You Want’ option at wargamevault for the first time.  Click on the image below to have a look at our storefront page there, where you will have the option to preview this product.

New project…   Leave a comment

I’m still giving some thought to the free mini-games for the next catalogue, but meanwhile another project has suggested itself to me. I was de-junking my home office when I found an old book I forgot I had even bought: a copy of the 1914 reprint of the Manual of Field Engineering 1911. It seems it belonged to a Regimental Sergeant Major T.A. Mellor of the Royal Engineers. Anyway, reading through it (to put off doing any more tidying and sorting) it struck me what a lot of great information there is in it for anyone planning a game that needs to be informed about the sort of defences or field work that could be completed at short notice.

Obviously the book is written from the perspective of the British Army at the start of the 20th Century, but it would be reasonable to assume other nations had similar capabilities, and the manual remained in use well into the inter-war years. Plus, the basic tools of axes, spades and picks haven’t changed much over the centuries, so you could extrapolate a lot of the information back to the Middle Ages if you wanted.

You could use the information to work out what sort of cover an infantry battalion could create during a war game turn, to create a realistic defence post for a skirmish game or even to work out how long the characters will take unearthing that ancient eldritch artefact in a RPG.

The book’s condition isn’t great, but I’ll scan the best illustrations and summarise the most useful information into one concise resource. More news when it’s nearing completion!

Freebie reminder!   Leave a comment

Don’t forget, if you download our utterly free catalogue you get two free games with it: an Argor FRPG mini-scenario AND a mini-wargame. You can either play them in combination (with the scenario outcome affecting the battle) or as stand-alone games. You need to have the rules for Argor to play the scenario, but the wargame comes complete with its own rules.

Get Catalogue 8 while you can: I’m working on the freebie for Catalogue 9, and once that’s done Catalogue 8 – and its free games – will be withdrawn.

Just click on the image below to go to our store at drivethruRPG, where you can download the catalogue for free.

A cannon blast from the past – Vectis   Leave a comment

Ok, not too sure why but there has been a sudden surge in interest in Vectis, our Napoleonic War game that features a fictional invasion of the Isle of Wight. Most especially the printed version, available from lulu.com.

This is a quite a surprise as the game has been around for a long while, and generally sales are for the download version. But heck, I’m not complaining!

If by any chance you’re interested in the printed version of Vectis, just click here.

Update   Leave a comment

I know it’s all gone a bit quiet with us lately, but there is something in the works! Catalogue 8 (which died with my hard drive) is being resurrected. What’s delaying it is the freebie game: all the development work on it was lost, so I’m starting from scratch. It’s a two-part freebie this time: an Argor FRPG mini-scenario followed by a wargame. The scenario outcome affects the wargame (but you CAN skip the RPG element if that’s not your thing!).

I won’t tempt fate by stating publication date… sometime this spring, let’s say!
